That “no soul”garbage came from biker manufacturers who made inferior products and needed to come up with a feature their bikes had that the Japanese bikes didn’t. Their customers picked up on it as a way of justifying their purchase of an inferior more expensive product. It’s pure xenophobia. There are flaws with Japanese bikes that they could have attacked, but why not make it a religious thing?. That way the Japanese manufacturers couldn’t respond.

Soul? I don’t need soul. I need it to fucking work every time I push the start button and launch. I’ve owned plenty of bikes with soul. KTM, Ducati, and HD. If sitting in the shop equates to soul, I had enough soul to last ten lifetimes. No, I like my bikes soulless because I am the soul in f the bike.

Everybody Listen up, HONDA made a SUBLINE VTWIN called a VTR 1000F FIRESTORM/SUPERHAWK! I have owned a few bikes in my 35ys lifetime. YAMAHA RD YPVS ON ALL MODELS 125 MK2/350MK2/500 v4MK2 it had to be as it had mk2 clocks! real racing potential. HONDA MT 50/MBX 125/NSR 125 MTX 200R with ATAC VALVE ENABLED:) VTR 250FD, VF400FD,VFR 400RR,VF 500FD, loved them all KAWASAKI GPZ 305 err it was ok :/ GPZ 500EN GPZ 750R ok SUZUKI TS 50 Bored out to an 80, Fantastic bike did 65 all day two up and wheelied in every gear because I was young and did not think of upping the sprockets. NEXT an RG 125 and 250 OW yesss, fantastic machines, VFR400RR again a highly competent and confident power machine and I would love a road legal NSR 500 GP, but I digress you cannot run this on the road. I love and understand the V4 layout but it`s now out of my price range RVF750 masterpiece as is the 10,00+£ FIREBLADE inline 4 masterpiece, BUT have you tried the VTWIN 1000F FIRESTORM it is in my opinion better than my CBR 600RR 2006, It has more usable grunt/acceleration is fantastic and it handles better ie I have not run wide on any corners or got into trouble so far in mid-bend! as the engine braking has aided and provided me with an audible speed/braking aid? The power is usable from 1,500 rpm and is as strong as a F**king OX and I do mean strong! This bike is fantastic it is stable at 135mph+ it accelerates as fast as I would like and the brakes are as good as any in my opinion. The bike feels light at any speed and is flickable and as nimble as you like, it feels lighter and obviously more powerful than any bike I have ever owned/ridden (FZR 1000 EXUP IS ON PAR for old school comparisons!) I love this example of litre class bike engineering and I also laugh when I can keep up with the best of them on a 21-year-old bike at a 10th of the cost, well done HONDA and I wished you would reproduce the bikes of yesteryears and stop producing bikes with anti-lock and anti-wheelie as if i wanted these degrading addons I would ask my GRANNY TO RIDE PILLION for half the cost!!

I don't really understand the division... I own both a Japanese bike (Yamaha) and American (Victory) and love them both. The Victory is a low maintenance performance bike just like the Yammie... I guess tribalism is everywhere and people just like to " us vs. them" when it comes to their bike scene. I for one just like to see people on two wheels. Whether it's sport bikes (my Yamaha) or power cruising ( my Victory Octane) or sport touring (my next bike- could be German or Japanese) or if you ride a cafe racer and just like zipping from stoplight to stoplight you are part of the larger cars vs. bike tribe. Just wave when you see a fellow biker regardless of the make or model, and if you see one on the side of the road and you have your tool kit with you, stop and be a helpful member of the tribe... Safe riding, ATGATT...

Well, Japanese bikes sound and look mostly the same, using the same engine layout. You can generally look at a Ducati with no decals and know what it is right off the bat. The same goes for just hearing one. Take the decals off a Japanese bike, and it won't be so easy to tell them apart.

?? The only problem seems to be that they are too good at building motorcycles, which isn't really a problem. It forced the other manufacturers to step up their game. Honestly, if you are talking about that undefinable "soul" of a motorcycle, it has been driven out of all modern motorcycles except for the ones that still look like they are made out of steel, iron, and limited amounts of aluminum, and are AIR cooled.

"Soul" is the wrong word, "Character" would be more accurate, but look at the BMW, sounds and looks like a Japanese bike. Character meaning, the pretty much all look and sound the same. MV Agusta sounds killer. Norton sounds bad ass. Ducati, Aprilia, both south killer. Now will these bikes beat a Japanese bike, hell no. I can agree with a lack of character, but if you're all about performance then Japanese or BMW is the way to go. I actually got more in to SuperMoto bikes simply because I don't need 180mph. In the twisties, SM's are sick. The Ducati SXV was awesome, the Husky and KTM's are killer, but expensive for what they are. Then the lowly, reliable, inexpensive, tank Suzuki DRZ450SM... All killer bikes for commuting or just riding the twisties with your buddies. There's just something about a dirt bike set up for the street. Then you have the sick ass Hypermotard; which I personally think is overkill. My favorite bike of all time is the RC51. Sound and looks. Plenty fast enough, decent in corners. I think the best looking Japanese bike out right now is the Kawasaki and it's nice to see them finally making nice bikes again. Bike back in the early development days had character because everyone was trying to figure it out, so they tried different shit. The RZ350 was wicked in its day. Before that the Susuki GT500 smoker. The H2 Kawi's. I love the 2 strokes and have thought about a CR500 or KX500 getting the SuperMoto treatment, but those bike are scary as hell. Cool video. I dig the old bikes.

I tell you what, coming from big cruisers to an FZ6, I think i'll only go back when i retire. My FZ6 is only a 600cc and less powerful than an R6. But i get some guy on a naked Harley with a tuned and cam built 110ci motor and they don't stand a chance. The soul of a sport (sport touring in my case) is they are eager. You get the revs about 10k and they come alive with fury. Eager to run and play like a 4mo puppy. And it's the refinement. Suspension, balanced. Brakes, slams your helmet into the back of your head and your jacket rides up. Acceleration, unmatched but refined and in the case of my FZ6, incredibly amazing. Not because it's fast. But because smooth and incredibly tame below 6,000, mild between 6,000-10,000, and pulling the front wheel off the ground in 1st and 2nd between 10,000-14,000. It's literally 3 bikes in one. Tame 500cc, then a mild FZ6R, then a bike that'll give an R6 a run for its money. Here's the voodoo/ refinement, Yamaha designed the motor to have good power from 1,000-14,000rpm without VTEC. Most other bikes were peaky in their power band. This thing, the whole rev range is power.

Japanese super bikes of any brand are basically the same indestructible rockets. They lack the individuality and drama of the Italian, British and German bikes....I guess you can say that for all European brands. But....the Euros have character, heritage, style and built with passion. When I was young, the japanese made perfect sense but as the years go by, and the wallet gets thicker you tend to be more eclectic and lean towards the unicorns. Having said that....I would take a mint CBX and pay top dollar for it. Damn thing sounds so sweet. Very nice video and narration by the way.

I believe all manufactures have their good, better, best. Some have more “soul” than others. I think my 1340 cc Suzuki B-King with no abs, no-traction Control, and over 100 ft lbs of torque below 10,000 rpm has plenty of soul. Nowadays, everything is computer limited to be “safe” and more rider friendly. I also think my daily ridden 650 V-Strom has a “soulful” sound and pep to it, that makes it a blast to ride around town and on dirt. To each his own. I would take the Ducati 1098 and not complain, however. Ps the sound from that Hyabusa engine on the B King with the Yoshi pipes make the most wonderful sounds when rolling off the throttle in gear!!! Yummy!

Japanese are great bikes. Performance, Power and reliability. Early Brit bikes where slow and a pain in the ass. But they where fun being able to dabble with them. But now there back with Triumph and just as good as far as I'm concerned. But now you can individualise them and make it yours. They sound great and handle great and just as reliable I feel. Don't like Ducati. Over expensive with the buyer being the ginney pig of the technology at there own cost. But if you want to stand out with empty pockets and spend more time talking about how cool they look instead of riding. Ye buy one. I wouldn't say no to jap bikes, For I've had plenty. 0:15 This reminds me of the time we were stopped at the traffic lights downtown with a mate on his old man's raked-out '85 Yamaha V-Max with open pipes that could almost break shop windows at idle. Some mouth-breather halfwit out on the turps drowning his sorrows with his mates happened to be crossing right in front of us (late, I might add) with the pedestrian signal and deviated slightly to admire the 'Harley' he thought he had spotted based solely on the noise. He disappointingly exclaimed in a derogatory manner "That's not a Harley! It's just a fuckin' japper!" to which my mate replied "It's better than that. It's TWO Harleys" referencing the fact it's a V4, which mouth-breather wouldn't have got be we all understood. Then, because of the delay of passage of the aforementioned mouth-breather's detour, the light had now changed to green and my mate immediately lit the rear tyre and leapt across the intersection leaving mouth-breather gasping in a cloud of smoke. I nearly missed the green because I was laughing so hard. RIP Lance. You were a bloody funny bastard and a demon rider.
